Learn how the decisions of the state legislature will affect our colleges and universities, public school systems, and our communities

A MESSAGE FROM MARQUITA McALPINE

Dear my Fellow Students of North Carolina:

There is a call for better health care, a better education system, collective bargaining for public employees, and an end of the war in Iraq; as well as, other pressing issues affecting our communities. As a student activist, I encourage you and all students to expand your roles off campus into the communities that surround us and commit to positive changes for North Carolina.

The time is approaching for the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP and over 86 partner organizations throughout North Carolina to assemble for the 3rd Annual massive People's Movement in Raleigh, NC, February 14, 2009. The Historic Thousands on Jones Street (HK on J), a progressive agenda pushing the banner of justice forward by providing change in the state public policy.

Last year, over 7, 000 of us marched to the Legislature on Jones Street in Raleigh; which also included over 1,500 students.
The "stakes are high" and it is imperative that students mobilize and become advocates of the 14-point agenda. Students are not only the future leaders and successors; we are TODAY's leaders and successors. Assemble with us on Jones Street and may our voices for justice rumble throughout the streets of Raleigh to push for this agenda. This is a movement, not a moment.

Therefore, I propose:

• Presidents of student organizations to incorporate HK on J³ in your next meeting's agenda to push for student participation throughout this movement

• Members of student organizations encourage other students to take part in this movement

• Change your profile picture to the HK on J emblem or the HK on J³ flyer to proudly show that you are endorsing this movement

• GET on the BUS for HK on J³!! Collaborate with different student organizations, with other local colleges/universities, middle schools and high schools; as well as, community leaders. Fill up buses, vans and carpool. We are riding the highways to HK on J³!
